Drogba cried as Chelsea players tried to stop Mourinho from leaving

Footballxtreme : According to a new book published in Spain called ‘Mourinho: Secrets of his success’, Didier Drogba cried while senior Chelsea players attempted to stop the departure of Jose Mourinho in 2007.

The book documents the drama that unfolded when Chelsea president Roman Abramovich relieved the Portuguese of his position at Stamford Bridge despite hin elevating the club to the summit of English football with back to back Premier League titles.

Chelsea defender Paulo Ferreira was quoted by the Daily Express, saying, “It is always complicated when a manager leaves a club, but this case was much more so.

“Jose came into the dressing room, gathered us all together and told us he was leaving. Didier was one of the worst affected. He wept like a child.”

Drogba himself was quoted saying, “There was lots of emotion. It seemed unreal, as though it was a movie.

“We used to see him every day, and we were unprepared for him leaving. It was a real shock.”

Club captain John Terry and Frank Lampard apparently spoke with the club’s management in order to push for Mourinho to remain as manager, however, with an exit deal already in place their efforts were to no avail.

“We spoke with the club, and told them clearly that we did not want Jose to go,” Terry said. “But he already had an agreement in place with the club.”

Lampard added: “I thought Jose would stay for 10 years. Everything was working perfectly.

“I don’t normally get emotionally involved in these matters. I know managers come and go – that is football.

“But in this case it was more than a manager who was going – it was a friend who was leaving us behind.”

On Tuesday night Chelsea secured passage to the knockout stage of the Champions League with a comfortable 3-0 win over Valencia. (socceranchor)
